The latest episode of View from the Top is here, and it’s one you won’t want to miss! This time, the podcast features Jane Lindholm, a storyteller, journalist, world traveler, and the creator of But Why: A Podcast for Curious Kids. With an incredible career and life full of adventures, Jane offers insights that are as inspiring as they are thought-provoking.

For almost 14 years, Jane was the voice of Vermont Edition, the daily program on Vermont Public that became a cornerstone of local news and storytelling. She stepped down in 2021 to focus on a new passion project—But Why. Through this wildly popular podcast, Jane and her team answer questions from kids on topics ranging from dinosaurs to the mysteries of the natural world. With over 16,000 questions submitted in the last eight years, Jane has mastered the art of explaining complex concepts in ways that are engaging and accessible for children.

But Jane’s story doesn’t stop at her career. A Harvard graduate with a degree in Anthropology, she has always had a passion for exploration and understanding other cultures. At just 17, she began backpacking across the globe, studying abroad in Nairobi, Kenya, and traveling through Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, China, and Japan. It was during one of these adventures in Thailand that she met her husband, further cementing her deep connection to the world beyond Vermont.

Jane’s global perspective has deeply influenced her work. She shares in this episode how these experiences shaped her belief in stepping out of one’s comfort zone, embracing spontaneity, and encouraging children to take acceptable risks to help them grow.

In this episode, Jane also reflects on life’s unexpected moments. She shares a personal story of being held at gunpoint—an experience that left her shaken but unharmed. It’s a story she tells with gratitude, emphasizing the importance of resilience and moving forward.

Jane also touches on her time at Vermont Public, where she learned firsthand how vital local news can be, especially during crises like Hurricane Irene. She recounts how the station became a lifeline for Vermonters, with some listeners depending entirely on Vermont Edition for connection and updates during the storm.

Now a Vermont resident for the past 17 years, Jane has built a life of storytelling, adventure, and community connection. Her perfectionist nature combined with her love of spontaneity has made her a standout voice in journalism and podcasting.
